Thanks for featuring the work of Romare Bearden. I live in Pittsburgh, and we are proud of Bearden's Pittsburgh connection. I respect Bearden's decision to not follow the artistic trend toward abstract expressionism, and to instead focus his work on representing the black experience. His collage work is seminal. I'm glad that he is getting the recognition that he deserves.

Thanks for your comment. One of the things that I like about Bearden's work is how he blends abstraction with narrative. His collages are wonderful, but his watercolors are also very appealing. I wish I'd had space to do justice to all the facets of his wonderful career.

Love this. On May 4 a few weeks ago this was the 10 Minute Art Challenge in the New York Times. I won’t speak for them but they ask viewers to do just that, study a special painting and reflect then they point things out. In my simple words I am in the shadows of their great Art Challenges. In less than inch by inch we can pinch in and out of this painting. You can find this now in the Upshot section.

Thanks for the tip.

Spending that kind of time pondering a work is such an excellent experience and one few people slow down long enough to do. When I'm giving exams in my art history classes, I have to sit with the works on my monitor while the students write their essays. I discover details I have never noticed in decades of teaching or details I have forgotten about over the years. Thanks for your comment.
