I have a beautiful jigsaw puzzle, Falls, Montreal River by J.E.H. MacDonald. Thank you for all the background information on the Group of Seven. All peaceful paintings!

Lovely post from you, as always. I do, though, think Emily Carr ought to be represented here with a painting. Whether or not she was “officially” part of the group, her relationship with it, by many accounts, was very close. Seems a missed opportunity not to show one of her works in this post.

That's a fair criticism. Carr's work is definitely worthy of attention, but so much of her career was separate from the Group of Seven. I did consider including her, but decided on the tighter focus on the origins of the group and its original members in order to keep the post close to our average length. Thanks for your support and comments; they are much appreciated.

You know, I almost came over here this AM to say that I think what I REALLY wanted was for you to pick one of your favorite Carr works, also, as your Group of Seven picks were so stunning. Thank you for responding, and for bringing us such perceptive commentary on a wide variety of art. BTW, your Manet-Degas post helped propel me over to the Met Museum to brave the throngs and see that exhibit. The throngs were indeed tough, but the exhibit was splendid, and your commentary on the paintings marvelous.

I have to agree with Mr. MacDonald, Varley's work was too abstract, but overall, I really enjoyed the paintings almost as much as your commentary.
